Possibilities for Change: Combating Gender Violence Against Youth in Conflict & Post-Conflict Situations

In every country where CAP is working, young people have identified sexual violence as a major concern. Their definition is not restricted to sexual attacks – instead it includes the different ways that the use of female sexuality and power over girls is becoming integrated into rebel and military strategies.

In three countries – Burma/Thailand, Cambodia and northern Uganda, young people have organized special projects to address these issues. In each country the approach has been distinct in order to respond to the particular concerns and needs in that situation.

1. Burma/Thailand: Research and advocacy projects to document the high level of rape and sexual violence against young refugees.

2. Cambodia: A public education and peer support program to prevent rape

3. Northern Uganda: A peer support program for child mothers and girls who were abducted by the Lords Resistance Army.

4. Colombia: Girls supporting girls. A rehabilitation program for teenage girls in Medellin, Colombia.
